Maria McDermott

Maria McDermott is from Jersey and has over twenty years’ experience working in the international finance industry. She is experienced in investment funds, private wealth, compliance, risk management and project management, and has been based in Asia for the last ten years having transferred to Hong Kong to develop the fiduciary services business of a leading offshore law firm. During her time in Asia she has also worked for various listed entities and financial service providers in Singapore and Shanghai, and is now based full time in Shanghai. Prior to her time in Asia, she spent over ten years working for a number of law firms and fiduciary service providers in Jersey.

Nancy Chien is head of Bedell Cristin's International Private Client practice. She is ranked as a leading individual in Legal 500.
Nancy has over twenty years of experience in a wide range of offshore matters in both the private client area as well as the corporate sphere. She is legally qualified in 4 jurisdictions, being Jersey, BVI, England and Wales and New Zealand. In the private client context, she advises ultra-high net worth families, family offices and intermediaries on all aspects of private client structuring including the use of trusts and foundations, as well as related corporate law issues (including where such vehicles are used for philanthropic purposes). She has considerable experience with high value and complex structures which enable the clients to retain a degree of control over their family assets and achieve effective succession planning. In the corporate area, she is one of the only Jersey lawyers with specific experience in pensions and employee incentive arrangements (having previously worked in the employee incentives and pensions team at Ashurst in London). She is the chairperson of the Jersey Pensions Association and is working closely with the Jersey government to enhance Jersey's offering of end of service gratuity plans and international savings vehicles. Nancy also has considerable experience in regulatory matters affecting offshore vehicles and service providers, including FATCA, the common reporting standard (CRS) and data protection.
